but the big question is not what will president obama propose, but will republicans automatically oppose it like they have. did they learn anything on tuesday? do they know the american people don't want obstructionism, they want action. but first let's get the latest from lisa ferguson out in los angeles hi lisa, good morning. >> hey bill good morning, everyone. the fiscal cliff is a big issue moving forward and there is a showdown in store. while john boehner has offered up a bit of a compromise he and harry reid have different ideas. >> people making all this money have to contribute a little bit more. >> the congressional budget

office are analyzing person provisions of the fiscal cliff. it finds letting these bush tax cuts expire is the least harmful way to improve the economy. but the gop would rather see lower rates and eliminating loopholes. yesterday senator chuck smumer called it a rumpled stillskin fantasy. earlier this week the president gave a very heart-felt speech to his staff and even teared up a bit. >> you guys -- [ inaudible ]. and i'm really proud of that. i'm really proud of all of you.

she wasn't drunk. >> oh, really? >> bill: does anybody believe this? >> i'm the most reasonable responsibility person out here. the president knows he and i can work together. >> bill: i'm the most reasonable man in washington except eric cantor has a gun to my head. >> yeah. >> bill: and to show how totally in denial he is. >> i think this has been the host misreported story of my two years. we don't have a tea party caucus to speak of in the house. >> bill: maybe he should tell michele bachmann that who started the tea party caucus in the house. and tell the 63 tea party

republicans that there is no tea party in the house. >> what is he doing? >> bill: i don't know. and again, all they do is lie. michele bachmann started the tea party caucus. maybe they don't always get their way, he can say, but they do. it is the tail wagging the dog we have seen that for the last two years under john boehner. he is not a bad guy, but he is not a leader, and he is not in charge. we'll get into that president obama coming up. and karl rove the total fool of this election season. but first. >> on this friday overhead lines making news. a 21-year-old man arrested after trying to rob nancy pelosi's house in california. he tried hitting the minority

leader's house in nap pa county not once but twice, monday and tuesday, which was election day. he was then caught by police robbing another house wednesday and then immediately admitted to breaking into pelosi's house, but he didn't take anything the second time because when he was in there he realized who's house it was. >> we ought to tell this guy there is hot property at the white house. >> the new jersey governor called the man he supported, mitt romney, to offer some support as well he said no he just sent romney a conciliatory email, but called president obama. >> bill: that's unreal. >> the samsung galaxy overtook

apples iphone. shipped 18 million units compared to iphone's 16. but that will not hold since the iphone 5 went on sale in the fourth quarter. >> bill: yeah i was going to say that's not -- >> i think that will change. >> absolutely. hey, one leftover election item wanted to get into here at the top of our show and then look forward with president obama and find out from you, real question to you here in our first hour together this morning. okay. so president won reelection right? now what does he do? what should he be fighting for? and will he show more fight on some issues in the second term now that he doesn't have to run

for reelection than he did in his first term? good question. i just got to say, karl rove has got to be the biggest horse's ass ever in american politics. if there is anybody that comes across as the big loser of this election season, it's not mitt romney or paul ryan it has got to be karl rove. he prides himself as being the smartest man in american politics. he did get george bushel elected as governor and george bush elected as president but then he bragged about -- he was going to create the permanent republican majority and he sold that crap in the white house, and people believed him. did it work? hum, i don't think so. >> yeah how did that work? >> i don't think john mccain got elected, did he? >> no, i don't remember him

winning. >> and i don't remember this guy -- mitt romney getting elected either. so then karl rove comes up with this american cross roads idea. of course the supreme court gave him a big give in citizens united, so they could raise this millions and millions and millions of dollars, and support all right-wing candidates and throw them into senate races, house races and the presidential race. and then karl rove goes on and some of the stuff he said -- he was so wrong. it's unbelievable. the "washington post" yesterday had a -- a whole series of quotes about how wrong they were -- and he is a commentator on fox news which is a huge conflict. he is out there raising money

defeat obama, and then he has out there supposedly a political pundit and then he writes for the wall street journal. he wrote in the final days of this presidential race, the polls favor mitt romney. no they don't. no they didn't. he was again just blowing smoke. furthermore in battle ground states the edge and early in absentee vote turnout that propelled democrats to victory in 2008 has clearly been eroded cut in half. no it wasn't. in fact i saw some figures yesterday that the early vote turnout was like the same as it was in 2008. so this guy is just popping off

out of his head. then, of course, election night, he goes on national television -- he is on fox, and when fox news, the right-wing channel has to admit the election is over. karl rove says no, you guys are wrong. he accuses the network of being wrong, of being premature, and insists that they withdraw their -- their call of obama winning the election. he was trying to recreate florida 2000. >> he was. it was a train wreck of what happens when you have a political person as a commentator and a pundit and you can see the conflict of interest playing out on live national television. >> bill: then yesterday he gets on national television well, two days later. yesterday he was back with megyn

kelly. listen to his explanation of why romney lost and how obama won. >> he succeeded by suppressing the vote. i know you can't bring yourself to vote for me but i'm going to paint this other guy as simply a rich guy who only cares for himself. they voted for obama by a 9-1 margin. >> bill: first of all that is who mitt romney is. mitt romney has told us himself he only hangs out with people that own nascar teams, nfl teams and have dressage horses. but it's like forcing people to pay a poll tax, or forcing them to have voter id. that's suppressing the vote.

telling the truth about mitt romney wasn't suppressing the vote. >> president obama has become the first president in history to win -- >> you keep saying that but he won, karl, he won. >> but you know what every candidate looks perfect on paper -- >> bill: yeah, guess what you don't look perfect on paper or television. karl rove why does anybody still believe him? now quickly, so president obama giving a speech today at the white house. he is going to put forth his plan for deficit reduction. that's the first thing. the questions that i have -- and i will be there today -- what else is the president going to push for? he is soon going to push for comprehensive well

well -- immigration reform. and stop employers from blocking employees from forming a union. i would also hope that the president is going to do something and really get serious about climate change after hurricane sandy how can we not act? and i would hope these and other issues -- and i want to hear from you 866-55-press -- that the president would go to the wall. i'm not going to hold anything back. i'm going to go balls forward -- he can say that i can't -- and fight the good fight, and i'm not going to cave in the way i did on too many issue notice the first term. i'm going to be a lot stronger and the american people are behind him i know. they want to see a fighter.

deal." and how the stimulus package was much more aggressive than we give credit for. he argues that obama used insider politics to get that down. i would argue in the last two years he used outsider politics. he did some profoundly aggressive things using his executive authority. stopping the in defense of marriage act, the dream act thing that he did to provide a pathway for the immigrant youths -- >> dream act. >> yes. >> bill: we're just about out of time, and plus let's face it he doesn't have to run for re-election. >> yes. people are hungry for this. so -- >> bill: sorry, we are out of time. kerry you are the best thank you for coming in. tuesday, you hear the conservatives saying oh people want stuff. people wanted a direction that said we want working people to have opportunity, so what we saw on tuesday night was president obama won reelection virtually all of the battleground states working people sent a really strong message which said enable opportunity for all of us. >> bill: uh-huh. >> we all want a fair shot in there. and frankly what they also said in so many places across america, was stop bashing public education, stop bashing teachers, stop with the extremism and obstructionism and let's work together. you saw that in initiative after initiative throughout the states. >> bill: california part of the initiative was raising taxes for more money for schools.

>> california is the biggest example of this. brown said we need an initiative measure. they said let's make it real progressive, and make sure that it is for schools, and so they changed the referendum months before -- you know literally a minute before it needed to be on the ballot, and governor brown was fantastic, and what hand was we won this referendum for revenues that are going to be directed to colleges and schools in the wake of a place that has had cut after cut after cut, and also beat out the referendum that said silence workers. so both of these things won in california, and the other thing that won in california was a win against obstructionism by having enough democrats in -- in the legislature to stop the kind of

filibustering that was going on there. and then you saw it also in florida, beating back the -- you know, back door let's kill public schools with vouchers. you sanit idaho, beating back this overreach of attesting fixation, and you saw it frankly, in indiana, where one of the poster children of let's bash the teachers was defeated by a teacher. >> bill: is that right? >> yeah. so you are seeing it in the reelection of the president, and the election of so many amazing people in the senate and we're seeing it in state legislatures throughout. bottom line it was unions got out the vote, but more importantly, working families said i want a fair shot and a fair shake -- >> bill: and that starts with education. >> exactly right. >> bill: this headline

californians endorse a tax initiative to avoid education cuts. >> exactly. >> bill: that's what the focus was. >> they have seen these cuts for year after year, you can't keep saying we want to help all kids learn, and keep cutting the things that kids need to learn, music, art and physical education, and courses for enrichment, and pretend we're going to help all kids be equipped for 21st century skills. >> bill: yes, randi weingarten we're very grateful for your representation. teacher's union show renewed strength in wake of elections. boy, you don't see that very often do you? >> no, you don't. look, the right-wing wants us gone. and they want us gone because

it's all political -- it's not about education at all. it's all because they see teacher unions and other unions as the -- as the walkers as the door knockers as the people who help progressive candidates. >> bill: people who help get out the vote. >> exactly. the difference in this election as well was the money power was all with karl rove. the people power were all with barack obama. so we are the ones that actually do that work and so they want us gone. so even though we are smaller and been dangered and demonized andscape goated for the last two years by the money power, what hand was he door knocked -- >> bill: right. we have had sister from nuns on the bus, and we had teachers on the bus too. >> we had a bus that really was about getting out the vote

regardless of who you were going to vote for. because the exercise of the franchise is really important in the united states of america. it's fundamental to our democracy. your vote, your right, their futures, and we went 6,000 miles. we were on the bus for three weeks, in oooooooooh florida, the east and getting the message out about what was at steak in this election. how do we make sure we have reform that is enduring and works. the investment for that the education for all kids not just some kids. how do you make sure there are good jobs and a safety net so there is medicare and social security. how do you make sure that the dream act so kids who are here

through no fault of their own are here through their chance of success. and every place we went we won. >> bill: they all do fit together, right. and here you had candidate at the very top of the ticket mitt romney with paul ryan who's budget would decimate the pell grant program, right? and clayborn pell was a democrat, but it was always a program that had bipartisan support. >> what has changed in america, and hopefully will change back what democrats are champion is a way to level the playing field, not to give handouts but to give hands up. so it's to make sure if kids are poor -- they can't ask their

parents to pay for their education -- >> bill: that's the mitt romney approach. >> their parents would love to but if you don't have the economic wherewithal you need it from somewhere else. if you cut the education like the paul ryan budget did, how do you have in urban or rural places, where you have poverty how do you make sure kids have enrichment courses, music, art, and what kids in private schools have, so it's enabling opportunity. it is levelling the playing field, enabling people to be able to reach and actually share -- actually reach for pos parity. >> bill: yeah, and that was clearly president obama's agenda. i was at george mason's university at the end of the campaign when he talked about

that. that group of 18 to 29 he got 60% of the vote. >> exactly. >> bill: he was speaking to making -- helping them, and making opportunities available to them. >> exactly. the groups that president obama won are the groups that understood that we are in this together. and what mitt romney was about was look you are on your own. so look if you are rich you don't need the infrastructure of government, unless of course if you have a terrible tragedy, like hurricane sandy, but i think this notion of we're all in it together -- and this is about not only rights but responsibilities. i mean, i loved actually as a former social study's teacher when the president spoke on election night, he was very

am most concerned about what happens in communities all across the country. >> bill: at the state level. >> at the state level. because what has happened with the tea party fights, and demagoguing, and people who pound their chest and say they are reformers, essentially you have mobilization because the way that education works for kids in community after community is to get real good investments so that we on an enduring basis actually help all kids succeed. so what i'm concerned about is that the republicans in the congress don't cut the thanks we need, and in fact we need to try to find revenues so that we have early childhood, we focus on community colleges and training to make sure that people who

have lost their jobs can be retrained for the jobs of today. >> bill: right. >> we have ways of making sure that kids become critical thinkers and can apply knowledge, because that is the pathway to middle class jobs so i want to see teachers have a voice in schools that we stop with the test fixation which is basically a factory model of teaching, and we focus on teaching and learning, and we also focus on fixing schools, not closing them so they can become anchors of community. so those are the things that i would like to see, washington help enable us to on the ground in communities around the country do what teachers want to do and teacher unions want to do, which is how do we make sure we help all kids succeed. >> bill: and the parents have to be involved, right?

>> absolutely. what we are seeing across the country because we are engaged in having ten or 11 of town halls with parents, community groups, teachers because we are about solutions of the union. how do you make this stuff work on the ground to help kids, and parents are yearning for that. mitt romney put the teacher unions on the ballot and he lost. >> bill: right. right. and the teacher unions won, and the kids won, and america won. >> right, so we are proxies for kids and for teachers. >> bill: you have done such great work, i love it. as a former teacher particularly, and as a union brother, thank you for your leadership on so many issues. >> thank you. thank you. >> bill: and thank you for coming in, and salutes to all of your members. >> thank you.

get the daily briefing, then meet with hilary clinton in the oval office. the president will be giving a speech to the nation from the east room of the white house about action we need to keep our economy growing and reduce our deficit. following that at 2:00 jay carney has his press briefing the first we have had in about three weeks at the white house. the white house also announcing that next week, just before thanksgiving, the president is going to take a little trip. he is going to asia burma, and thailand before going to cambodia. it is part of establishing the fact that america is an asian country as well as a european country.

off the fiscal cliff, but the big question is not really what is president obama going to say? the big question is will republicans in congress cooperate? did they learn anything tuesday? do they realize the american % people want action? we'll chew that over. again, get your calls but first the latest today's current news update from lisa ferguson. >> hey, bill. good morning, everyone. republican super pacs have some explaining to do now that their billionaire donors won't see their favorite candidates in office. karl rove and america cross roads are defending their spending. the sunlight foundation finds that out of more than $103 million cross roads spent on the election, less than 2% of it ended up getting someone elected. foster freeze says the problem

is a lack of transparency not for american voters but himself. freeze told the l.a. times you have no idea how much these groups are struggling financially, so he doesn't know how much of his own money went towards delivering the message instead of paying the staff. he does not think that will stop the big spenders from bank rolling the candidates. now that the president is definitely back in office jfshgs john boehner confirmed to abc, house republicans will no longer try to repeal the affordable care act but that doesn't mean it is safe just yet, dozens of lawsuits are underway challenging that employers cover contraception. the issue has a good chance of ending up in the supreme court, though likely not for at least another year. we'll be right back. ♪

midnight showing of the new james bond film. >> bill: phil backer has the phones as well. john boehner, he is this very jealous that president obama is getting all of this attention, so boehner had to give an interview last night, which he did to diane sawyer. it shows what a parallel universe john boehner lives in. first of all he says this. >> i'm the most reasonable responsible person in washington. the president knows this. he knows he and i can work together. the election is over and now it's time to get to work. >> bill: i'm the most reasonable person in washington. [ laughter ] >> bill: i think he forgot to say, except eric cantor has a gun to my head. >> the second part is certainly

true eric cantor and 200-some people standing behind him. >> bill: that's what we think, that the tea party runs the show. no, john boehner says that's not true. >> i think this has been the most misreported story of my two years. we don't have a tea party caucus to speak of in the house. [ laughter ] >> bill: now somebody -- maybe somebody should tell michele bachmann that right? >> yes. >> bill: she started the tea party caucus. there were 60 tea partiers elected in 2010. >> right. and there are more who subscribe to the basic idea. >> bill: of course. and they control boehner. >> exactly. i'll give boehner this much, if it were entirely up to him, he

might cut a reasonable deal with obama -- >> bill: i think you are right about that. >> but it doesn't work that way. >> bill: obviously he is not calling the shots, the tea party caucus is. and if you ask them if they are tea partiers they will say you are damn right we are. >> of course. of course. >> bill: we'll be joined later by the head of the hispanic caucus in the house of representtives. but first. >> on this friday overhead lines making news, they have asked the president once and they are asking again, the physician's committee for responsible medicine is making a second plea to president obama to stop eating junk food in

public. the images of him grabbing burgers go viral and then glamourize unhealthy eating. >> well look at the results. he is a skinny guy. >> yeah. >> he is no chris christie. >> bill: yeah, come on give him a break. >> there may be progress in getting an nhl season back on the ice. the union broke their silence yesterday saying they offered big concessions to team owners that includes a 50/50 revenue split as well as owners honor all existing contracts. all games through the end of this month has now been canceled. >> wait, the nhl they are not playing games? who knew? >> bill: that's true. that's the problem. >> i care deeply about this because the new york time's chief hockey correspondent is a good buddy of mine so i want

him to have something to do. >> sure. sure. >> wal-mart announced it is starting black friday shopping earlier this year. the retailer opening its stores at 8:00 pm on thanksgiving. sears followed saying they will also open at the same time, and kmart will be open all day on thanksgiving, but won't offer sales until thursday night. but macy's kohl's and best guy are not opening until midnight on friday. >> bill: the holidays are approaching, and i have put on my third scarf of the morning. >> costume change. >> bill: you can't find this at wal-mart. go to the website at billpressshow.com and check out carol's scarves. they make perfect holiday gifts.

>> i'm sold. i will have a look. >> bill: michael everybody was saying it was going to be really, really close. romney people were saying hey, we got this in the can. it turned out to be a pretty good night for progressives wasn't it? >> it wasn't that close. i was a little timid in my own prediction, i said 294 electoral votes, but back in august i wrote a column that said the coming of the obama landslide and i said 330 isn't out of the question. >> bill: so it will be 332 with florida -- because florida will be called today if i recally for obama. >> yes, and the conservatives are trying to emphasize the popular vote, but 2-something percent is not exactly a squeaker. >> bill: no. >> and if you look down the list of swing states, of course ohio, virginia and florida were

very close, but the other swing states, obama won them by six seven, eight points every one of them. >> bill: and he won eight out of nine. >> exactly. >> bill: now i also think when you look at this coalition that president obama put together african-americans, 92% obama, latinos, 71%, obama; women 55%; young voters 18 to 29, 60%, and i think it was like 55 to 30 or 34 whatever -- >> yeah. >> bill: he put together a coalition that really does represent the future and the 21st century, right? and mitt romney has angry old white men. >> yes and obama's coalition

came out in really big numbers. the initial reports that said it was a lot smaller, i think turned out to be wrong, and you allow for some decrease in turnout in new jersey and new york because of the hurricane. it was pretty close to 2012, and the party id distribution as you know, because in 2008 7% more democrats voted than republicans, and in september and october when the polls were coming out and showing obama with a lead in ohio, and all of these plays, conservatives would go on twitter and go to their blogs and say there is no way this is going to happen. it's not going to be like 2008. well, it was d-plus six. so the obama coalition came out, and the republican coalition didn't. >> bill: and nobody got it more

wrong than karl rove. karl rove says -- he said october 31st writes into "wall street journal." it comes down to numbers, and in the final days of this presidentialries from polling data to early voting they all favor mitt romney. what is he smoking? >> well, you know, it's not like there is an aberration karl rove's reputation, i'm glad it is going to get deflated here, because it has been a long time coming. he didn't really win the 2000 election, right? >> bill: yeah right. >> then they won reelection as an incumbent by not as much as barack obama won by the way, and that was during wartime, and bush got only 286 electoral votes, then in 2006 rove said

you can have your math, i have the math, and it turned out to be completely wrong, and it was a wipeout, and then rove throughout 2002, 2003, 2004 was saying we're building a permanent republican majority that is going to last the next 50 years, and you can take it to the bank and what he did -- and don't forget he was bush's chief domestic policy advisor right? >> bill: yeah. yeah. >> the worst domestic policy we have seen from a presidency since the 1920s, so that is all his legacy. and finally it is catching up with him. >> bill: yesterday he goes back -- why fox news would even allow him back after election night by saying no, this network is wrong.

he says fox is wrong by declaring or announcing or admitting that barack obama had been reelected. yesterday he goes back on fox with megyn kelly, and here is his answer to why barack obama won. >> he succeeded by suppressing the vote. by saying to people you may not like who i am but i'm going to paint this other guy as simply a rich guy that only cares about himself. 53% said that mitt romney's policies would only help the rich. >> bill: first of all that is who mitt romney is. but voter suppression? after all they did in these states. >> it's just mind boggling. and the overthing that he said that i wondered does he really believe that people don't like

barack obama? people he talks to don't like barack obama, but if you look at polls constantly throughout these years do you personally approve of barack obama, not the job he is doing, but do you like barack obama it's always 62%, 64%, the only people who say no to that are the karl roves in this country. >> bill: rove and cross roads raised $300 million. a good chunk of it went to trying to defeat president obama. what does he say to these millionaires and billionaires today? and will he still be able to raise that kind of money? >> i suspect he will. and good. >> bill: yeah. better him than somebody who knows what they are doing. >> exactly.

legislation they deserve. >> bill: michael today the president is giving his speech about the fiscal cliff and how to avoid it, which is the first priority. >> yeah. >> bill: the sequestration, unless something else kicks in. what else can we expect in his second-term agenda. >> i have a piece out today talking about this stuff. and i looked at "the daily beast," but you'll be rerouted. the fiscal cliff is the first thing i talk about obviously, and then immigration reform and then climate change and maybe the possibility of a carbon tax down the pike, and then i talk about foreign policy and how obviously it's traditional that presidents in their second terms turn more attention to foreign policy, because it is something they can do without congress

and they start wanting to leave a legacy. now, i should add of course as long as the republicans control the house, three of those not the foreign policy piece, but the other thing are still really, really hard to do. >> bill: unless maybe they learned something from tuesday? >> uh-huh. >> bill: if their goal was to prevent his getting a second term -- >> right. >> bill: if the goal now is to prevent his getting a third term -- already mission accomplished. >> the goal is in their gut, and they hate him, and they just can't bare it. can they change that mindset, i don't know. >> bill: i got to interrupt you because we are just out of time. congressman charlie gonzalez coming up next. >> announcer: this is the "bill press show." ♪

♪ >> announcer: heard around the country, and seen on current tv this is the "bill press show." >> bill: okay on a friday friday november 9, '30-three minutes after the hour it is the "full court press" coming to you from capitol hill. president obama with a decisive victory tuesday night, and partly the result of the support he received from a growing force in american politics and certainly the fastest-growing demographic in american politics the latino vote. joining us now is michael from "the daily beast."

joining us the chair of the hispanic national caucus charlie gonzalez representing the 20th congressional district of texas. good morning. >> good morning. >> bill: 71% of the latino vote. why do you think latinos turned out in such numbers to support the president and how did that happen? >> the first thing during the campaign people would say what is going to happen because the president is being criticized for not having passed comprehensive immigration reform, but i used to say, yes, but we have a secret weapon the republican party. they were their own worst enemy.

it didn't matter what they did. they were so strident in their rhetoric, their position, everything. there was no way they were going to appeal to latinos. latinos will look at an individual, listen to them, and then basically say i'm going to listen if you are reasonable what is your position? so what is amazing is their proposals matched or exceeded their rhetoric which was counterproductive and totally unreasonable, so i would say, of course, i think the president's commitment to comprehensive immigration reform and of course affordable health care education, those things played incredibly well in your community, because those are in our own self interest. >> bill: and the dream act, of course right? >> what the president did was deferred action on the dream

[ inaudible ] was major. it was the right thing to do and there was nothing happening in congress, and i think that was kind of a down payment or demonstration of good faith on the part of the president that he wasn't giving up. >> bill: i want to ask you about the house of the question, because it didn't just happen that 71% woke up and ran out to vote. i mean there was a concerted effort in the latino community to get people registered and out to vote, correct? >> absolutely and of course we did that with the help of the republican party pretty much. we can go out in the community and tell everyone where we are, what are our priorities and why that is in the best interest of latino communities, but we had a lot of help. these guys are so far off. they demonized the immigrant. and i know it wasn't number

1 -- at the very top of what latinos were concerned about in the nation we're like everyone else, health care, education, jobs. but it's personal to us. it's only a question of how long ago many of our families came into the united states. many of us were here before the united states. so it really is a continuum, so we can still relate to the newly arrived immigrant. and there are so many of us throughout, as i say kind of a continuum of the length of time we have been in this country. when you have arizona, and those kind of laws and the extreme rhetoric of the tea party, it does filter across all latino communities.

you can't have kids chanting usa, usa, usa, arizona, when five citizen latino kids take the basketball court in two different cities in texas unless something bad is happening out there. so something has to stop. >> congressman i want to ask two questions going forward about the republicans. you are already hearing some of them. i read that republicans should embrace, immigration reform amnesty, learn to say the word. so my questions are what do you think the prospects are of the republican party coming to that position any time soon? and number 2, if they do would that in fact be politically transformtive? >> it's really strange. i think you can base the policy just on good economics, and i think the republicans will do

that. i don't think the democrats' best interests are served by bashing over their heads and rubbing their faces in it and saying look how wrong you were now you are for amnesty, because it has never been amnesty for the democrats. and guess what you are punished for violating the law, because we're still a nation of laws yet we don't condemn people or give them the most extreme of punishments, so i think if we remain reasonable, the republicans will find a way to simply reverse their course and -- and appear to be more reasonable about things, but there's still -- there's an element over there on the house side, and i don't know steve king, and others are still going to be taking the floor and saying things that republican leadership will have to disavow, which they never did before so

i think that -- i'm hopeful, and there's some good signs coming out of the republican side from speaker boehner and others we'll have to see what lamar smith -- he is chair of the judiciary committee, but will no longer be the chair. and that's the first stop for immigration reform. >> bill: charlie of course it has got to get to congress and the president is the one ultimately who will have to take the lead, congressman. he was criticized by many progressives and leaders of the latino community for not pushing harder for immigration reform in the last four years. do you feel that the president is committed to making this a high priority starting right away in his second term? >> absolutely. and bill, one thing that didn't come out in the campaign but we

met with us on a regular basis, and we charted a legislative course, and we were frustrated. and the truth this we couldn't get the votes that were needed to get immigration reform off the ground. but it will just be a question at this time -- the republicans will participate in those negotiations and meetings at the white house. we never had anyone participate, and starting in 2008 after the president's election when we had lindsay graham and -- >> bill: right. >> -- first question is do we get graham and mccain back on board, and if we have leaders

like that, and boehner basically tells his republican caucus come on guys this was not a good course in the past and it is disrows in the future. >> congressman peter ogburn here. i just noticed the spurs just lost their very first game of the season. they are looking strong in the nba. what do you think, how are they going to do? they look good. >> they do it is an interesting team. a lot of young people you don't have a lot of the big names. and as they get older and everything else, you start thinking about the new blood, and it is going to be interesting how that combination, and how you rest your star players, and get them at their specific times of the game, and will that continue to work for us. i think it is going to be a

great season in my opinion. >> bring on the lakers. [ laughter ] >> bill: i did mention that congressman gonzalez is calling from san antonio. >> yes he is. >> bill: congressman we're going to miss you, but very excited to meet joaquin, elected to take your seat in the house. >> that's correct. and as he introduces himself all of the time, he is the better-looking of the twins. [ laughter ] >> they both have the same education and everything else. i don't know -- i always tell people the way you distinguish the two, because it is very difficult, is the mayor, is married. so look for the wedding ring. but in washington it will be joaquin, and they are both really bright individuals, tremendous capacity to understand whatever is before

dubois, pennsylvania. karl rove raised $300 million. what do you think karl rove got out of that personally? >> yeah we must have -- >> bill: i bet ya easily a million bucks. >> and is any of this disclosed when he goes on fox news as a commentator. >> bill: no. >> it's a train wreck of where dirty tricksters get treated like real pundits and the line gets so blurred. >> bill: i would have to say he is the biggest horse's ass on fox news but then there's dick morris. >> just put the two of them in a room and lock the door and say you two fight it out.

>> bill: michael here is my question to you, there have been many times and strong obama supporter, but there have been many times in the first four years when i said barack obama, you are not coming through, and fighting the fight. you are too timid and don't have enough backbone on some public option, right? through it away. beneficiary's taxes, never going to renew them, gave them another two years. are we going to see a stronger more backboned obama in the next four years? >> i think we will. we'll get some hints today when he gives this speech about the fiscal cliff. of course he's going to be conciliatory and bipartisan and so forth, but he needs to say, also, you know, these are my lines in the sand and i'm the president, and there is only one president, and i'm going to set

the terms of debate here, and if the republicans stall on the tax increases for the upper brackets, i think he needs to get out there every day, and say the republican party is threatening to tank the economy to protect the top 1% of americans. >> bill: and name them and blame them absolutely. >> yeah, and beyond january, we'll have another debt ceiling come up this spring and he has to handle that one really differently. >> bill: yeah, and on all of those issues you mentioned immigration reform, global warming, foreign policy issues whatever the list is the president has to fight and fight and lead and even if he doesn't win at least go down fighting. >> and he has public opinion with him. >> bill: absolutely. michael great to see you.
